Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for Courier, Express and Parcel Services (CEP).

VITRONIC's optical character recognition automatically records hand- and typewritten characters on a parcel such as addresses, zip codes, street names, towns, numbers of buildings and similar, on labels, packaging and products, and even behind crumpled foil.
The OCR software automatically analyzes the data captured and reconciles it with a country-specific database. Innumerable parcels and letters are delivered and sorted by address every day in distribution centers belonging to courier, express and parcel companies. This task has long been performed by automated sorting systems. Before sortable labels can be attached to items, the hand- and typewritten data first needs to be identified accurately and efficiently.

The VIPAC optical character recognition is performed in the following steps:

  • Label detection
  • Identification of the label ID barcode and the label fields
  • Generation and evolution of label field hypotheses
  • Separation of the lines and the characters in the label field
  • Isolating the characters from the background
  • Separation of the individual characters
  • Classification of the individual characters
Benefits at a Glance:
  • Accurate, efficient, automatic reading of hand- and typewritten address details, even behind foil (OCR)
  • top read rates and accuracy, even at high conveying speeds of 4.5 m/s
  • significantly improved throughput rate
  • shorter throughput and delivery times
  • enables automated handling and automatic sorting
  • different types of writing can be read reliably
  • best read results, even with poor character quality and low contrast
  • reads all sides of the item, regardless of how it is positioned
  • database updates automatically, better service for parcel customers
  • reads colored text
  • any module can be added (e.g. barcode and 2D code reading, volume measuring, weight recording)
  • read results are displayed as an image in real time and archived
  • VITRONIC offers the option of web-based monitoring and video coding for 100% read rates
